No illusions should exist about who has truly been “playing politics” with the Sotomayor nomination

The Senate’s likely confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court today presents the country with a valuable, albeit uncomfortable, example of how politics not only continues at the court house steps, but informs who gets to don the judicial robe. For a town that often uses the phrase “playing politics” as a pejorative, it has been the virtue of those supporting Judge Sotomayor.

From the moment President Obama nominated her, Sotomayor’s nomination has been centered on courting the Hispanic vote – an increasingly important constituency for winning the White House, and a key to President Obama’s 2008 winning coalition. White House officials who spoke anonymously after Sotomayor’s nomination to TIME Magazine noted that “it’s not a bad thing” that Republicans have to assess their opposition to Sotomayor in light of politics, given their 9-point drop in Hispanic support during the 2008 election, rather than assess her fidelity to the Constitution.

Healthy Choices…For Our Country

President Obama stepped up to the podium last week to an expectant audience, The American People. The press conference, which was set up to alleviate some of the fears regarding the impending healthcare initiatives, left myself and many others with more questions than answers. I am a healthcare professional.  I work on the frontlines of community health nursing and on a daily basis I encounter many of the programs and services addressed in the upcoming healthcare reform. To say our system is in desperate need of improvements is an understatement.

Rocco’s Rantings

Our nation has been assailed in recent years, mostly in major metropolitan areas, by annoying busybodies bent on saving us all from ourselves. People sat idly by while their local governments told private businesses that they couldn’t allow smoking on their own property. Then came the trans-fat Gestapo, claiming that the public cost of unhealthy eating gave them the right to plan a restaurant’s menu in committee. But that was all before Obamacare. With the federal government paying your health costs directly, the nanny-state will finally be unleashed. The Senate is already considering a tax increase on soda and other sugary drinks – justified, of course, by the cost of socialized health care site. They will not stop at soda. Soon more aspects of your life and diet will be subject to scrutiny and control by DC bureaucrats that are convinced they know what’s best for you.

YCC President Receives Political ‘Rising Star’ Award

Christopher N. Malagisi, 28, president of the Young Conservatives Coalition, received the Campaigns & Elections Politics Magazine “Rising Star” award. One of the most prestigious honors in politics, the award goes to people age 35 or under who have already made a significant mark in political advocacy. The magazine chose 10 Republicans, 10 Democrats and seven nonpartisan leaders this year out of a pool of several hundred nominees.

“Capping off an historic election year, we received a record number of nominations for this year’s Rising Stars,” said James Klatell, managing editor of Politics. “With so many exceptional young people working in politics today, this was an exceedingly difficult process.

The Rising Stars will be honored in Washington, DC on June 12 during the 26 annual Campaigns & Elections “Art of Political Campaigning” conference. Past Rising Stars have included David Axelrod, Paul Begala, Donna Brazile, James Carville, Alex Castellanos, Rahm Emanuel, Ed Gillespie, Karen Hughes, Laura Ingraham, Jim Pinkerton, Ralph Reed and George Stephanopoulos.

“I am very honored to have received this award but it’s more of a tribute to all the leadership and all the members of the YCC who have helped get our message out about the necessity of fostering youth activism within the conservative movement and Republican Party,” stated Christopher N. Malagisi, president of the YCC.

The YCC seeks to: 1.) Organize a new 21st century young professional conservative networking coalition for the purposes of communication, sharing resources, and strategic coordination; 2.) Serve as an umbrella organization for leading right-of-center young adult and college groups; 3.) Employ an educational awareness campaign defining what it means to be a conservative today and fostering youth activism within the conservative movement at large.
