On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan was just seventy days into his first term of office when John Hinckley, Jr., opened fire. In “Rawhide Down,” Del Quentin Wilber tells the electrifying story of the day when President Reagan nearly died. With the expertise of a seasoned reporter, Wilber uses firsthand accounts to present the events of that day with minute-by-minute cinematic clarity. Throughout the attack, surgery and hospitalization, President Reagan led the nation – with grace, humor and courage – even in the most terrifying of moments. Our panelists will discuss the political impact of the day that forever changed President Reagan’s relationship with the American people.
Copies of our panelists’ books and other selected publications on the life and legacy of President Ronald Reagan will be available for purchase.

The challenges include cyber warfare, cyber terrorism, cyber espionage, cyber attacks on defense facilities, critical infrastructure and private companies, and cyber theft of personal data. They give rise to complex and interconnected legal and policy issues, in areas such as the law of armed conflict, privacy and the scope of regulation, which will be addressed at this symposium.

Watermelons: The Green Movement’s True Colors
Speaker:
James Delingpole
Author and Blogger, “Daily Telegraph”
Host:

Date: Thursday, June 30, 2011

News media inquiries, please call (202) 675-1761
With characteristic wit and humor, James Delingpole’s latest book, “Watermelons: The Green Movement’s True Colors,” examines how “Climategate” came about and what it means. By delving into the background of the organizations and individuals who have sought to push global warming to the top of the political agenda, he shows that beneath their cloak of green lurks a heart of red. He explains how the scientific method has been sacrificed on the altar of climate alarmism and argues that the modern environmental movement – at its roots – is not an effort to save the world, but to rule it.
James Delingpole writes a blog for Britain’s “Daily Telegraph” website and in 2010 won the Bastiat Prize for Online Journalism. He is the author of several books, including: “365 Ways to Drive a Liberal Crazy,” “Welcome to Obamaland: I’ve Seen Your Future and It Doesn’t Work,” “How To Be Right,” and the Coward series of World War II adventure novels.

“Minority Religious Communities at Risk”
The Federalist Society’s Religious Liberties Practice Group
and The First Freedom Center
Wednesday, June 15, 2011 12:00 PM-2:00 PM
National Press Club
Lisagor Room
529 14th Street, NW
Washington, DC
Many commentators assert that there is no better measure of the human rights climate in any country than the treatment its authorities accord their minority religious communities. These small, sometimes ancient, sometimes immigrant, sometimes newly converted communities are the “canaries in the coal mine” of human rights. Attempting to exercise the freedoms of the individual human conscience guaranteed in universally recognized international covenants, Egyptian Copts, Venezuelan Jews, Ahmadiyya Muslims, Pentecostal Christians, Bahai, humanist non-believers, and numerous others in many lands suffer imprisonment, intimidation, denial of sustenance and employment, and death. Conflicts arise over the treatment of minorities: conflict prevention and conflict resolution often turn upon the credible redress of their grievances. Our panel of experts will discuss these and other issues.
Panelists:
Hon. Randolph Marshall Bell, President, First Freedom Center
Rep. Christopher H. Smith, Chairman, Africa, Global Health and Human Rights Subcommittee, Committee on Foreign Affairs, United States House of Representatives, New Jersey 4th District
Mr. Tad Stahnke, Director of Policy and Programs, Human Rights First
Moderator: Mr. William L. Saunders, Senior Vice President of Legal Affairs, Americans United for Life

College tuition has risen four times faster than the rate of inflation in the past two decades. While faculties like to blame the rising costs on fancy athletic buildings and bloated administrations, professors are hardly getting the short end of the stick. Spending on instruction has increased 22 percent over the past decade at private research universities.
Parents and taxpayers shouldn’t get overheated about faculty salaries: tenure is where they should concentrate their anger. The jobs-for-life entitlement that comes with an ivory tower position is at the heart of so many problems with higher education today. Veteran journalist Naomi Schaefer Riley, an alumna of one of the country’s most expensive and best-endowed schools, explores how tenure has promoted a class system in higher education, leaving contingent faculty who are barely making minimum wage and have no time for students to teach large swaths of the under- graduate population. She shows how the institution of tenure forces junior professors to keep their mouths shut for a decade or more if they disagree with senior faculty about anything from politics to research methods. And she examines how the institution of tenure – with the job security, mediocre salaries and low levels of accountability it entails – may be attracting the least innovative and interesting members of our society into teaching.
Naomi Schaefer Riley is an affiliate scholar at the Institute for American Values. Until recently, she was the deputy Taste editor of the “Wall Street Journal,” where she covered religion, higher education and philanthropy for the editorial page. A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University, she previously authored “God on the Quad: How Religious Colleges and the Missionary Generation Are Changing America” and she was the winner of the 2006 American Academy of Religion’s Newswriting Contest for Opinion Writing.

In World War II, American soldiers went overseas to rescue England from the Nazi menace. Now, with America threatened from within by the specter of social democracy, British politician Daniel Hannan returns the favor. A thoughtful and articulate spokesman for conservative ideas, he is well-versed in America’s traditions and founding documents and possesses the insight and experience to help America recapture its distinctive ideals and avoid turning into a socialist state. In “The New Road to Serfdom,” Hannan argues forcefully and passionately that Americans must not allow their nation to be taken down the road to European Union-style social democracy. He pleads with Americans not to abandon the founding principles that have made their country a beacon of liberty for the rest of the world.
Daniel Hannan is a writer and a politician. He contributes to several newspapers, including the “Wall Street Journal” and the London “Daily Telegraph.” A former president of the Oxford University Conservative Association, he was elected to the European Parliament in 1999, at the age of twenty-seven, and has been re-elected twice.

“Primetime Propaganda” is the story – told in their own words – of how television has been used over the past sixty years by Hollywood writers, producers, actors, and executives to promote their liberal ideals, to push the envelope on social and political issues, and to shape America in their own leftist image. In this thoroughly researched history of the television industry, Ben Shapiro argues that left-leaning entertainment kingpins have leveraged – and continue to use – their positions and power to push liberal messages, while actively discriminating against their opponents on the right. According to Shapiro, television isn’t just about entertainment – it’s an attempt to convince Americans that the social, economic, and foreign policy shaped by leftism is morally righteous.
Ben Shapiro is a graduate of UCLA (which he entered at the age of sixteen) and Harvard Law School. At seventeen, he became the youngest nationally syndicated columnist in the United States. He is the author of the national bestsellers “Brainwashed,” “Porn Generation,” and “Project President,” and hosts The Ben Shapiro Show in Orlando, Florida.

In its infancy in the late 19th Century, the game of football was still a work in progress that only remotely resembled the sport millions follow today. An Americanized version of rugby, there was no common agreement about many of the game’s basic rules, and it was incredibly violent and extremely dangerous. Numerous young men were badly injured and dozens died playing it in highly publicized incidents, often at America’s top prep schools and colleges.
Objecting to the sport’s brutality, a movement of proto-Progressives led by Harvard University President Charles W. Eliot tried to abolish it. President Roosevelt, a vocal advocate of “the strenuous life” and a proponent of risk, acknowledged football’s dangers but admired its potential for building character. In 1905, he summoned the coaches of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton to the White House and urged them to act. The result was the establishment of the NCAA as well as a series of rule changes that ultimately saved the game.
John J. Miller is National Correspondent for “National Review,” a contributor to the “Wall Street Journal,” and the author of four books, including “The First Assassin” (a novel) and “Our Oldest Enemy: A History of America’s Disastrous Relationship with France.” This fall, he will become Director of the Dow Journalism Program at Hillsdale College in Michigan.

“New Conscience Regulations from the Department of Health & Human Services:
Do they Strike the Right Balance between Conscience and the Medical Profession?”
The protection of conscience for health care providers has, in some arguments, been pitted against the right of an individual to receive a health care product or service. This past February, the Obama Administration revised earlier conscience clause regulations enacted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services during the Bush Administration. What are the practical implications of these revised regulations? How will the federal government now handle complaints filed by health care providers who allege that they have been compelled to violate their moral or religious beliefs? These and other questions will be addressed by our panel of experts.

This Friday is April 1st, which means that it’s also April Fools’ Day. That said, what better way to celebrate the holiday than by toasting a cold one to the man who’s made making a fool out of liberal sacred cows a near art form? That’s right—this month’s special guest mingler will be none other than the modern-day muckraker whom Jon Stewart of The Daily Show once dubbed “the Ashton Kutcher of the conservative movement,” Mr. James O’Keefe.
As the man behind headline-blazing exposes of several of the nation’s most prominent liberal special interests and institutions, James’ work has led to the nationwide shutdown of the uber-corrupt ACORN outfit (w/Hannah Giles) and a historic vote by the U.S. House of Representatives to ban federal funding for NPR. So come grab a drink this Friday with James and let him tell you all about his undercover organization, Project Veritas.

The Economic Impact of Government Spending
a half-day conference hosted by The Cato Institute
Thursday, April 7, 2011
2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Spending by the federal government has doubled in the past 10 years, rising from $1.86 trillion to $3.82 trillion. Because of entitlement programs and demographic changes, however, federal spending could climb to more than 50 percent of GDP if government policy is left on autopilot. At this special afternoon conference, legislators and policy experts will discuss the economic consequences of bigger government, regardless of how it is financed, and analyze proposed solutions.
2:00 p.m. “The CAP Act: To Dramatically Reduce Federal Spending over 10 Years”

SUMMARY:
While homeland security can sometimes sit on the backburner of the nation’s policy agenda, the threat of terrorism against America continues—as evidenced by the recent Christmas Day and Times Square terror plots. Continuing to stop terrorism, while keeping Americans free, safe, and prosperous is a challenge that can’t be overlooked by today or tomorrow’s leaders. After the panel, stay and join us for a networking reception with FREE Drinks and Hors D’Oeuvres on Heritage’s Roof Terrace to discuss the issues further with the panelists and fellow guests.
