A new poll of America’s 18-29 year-olds released yesterday by Harvard’s Institute of Politics gives the Republican Party serious hope for change in 2010.

The poll reveals a significant enthusiasm gap among young voters, with young Republicans expressing greater eagerness to vote in November’s midterm elections than their young Democrat counterparts. Among young Republicans, 41 percent said they will “definitely be voting in November” compared to 35 percent of under-30 Democrats and 13 percent of young Independents.

Even more significantly, young McCain voters are much more likely than young Obama voters to show up at the polls in 2010. Fifty-three percent of under-30 McCain voters say they will definitely vote, compared to 44 percent of those who supported President Obama. There have been early signs that the young Americans who helped fuel the Obama campaign are not beholden to the Democrats: Bob McDonnell won the under-30 demographic 54-44 in Virginia’s gubernatorial election, and only 15 percent of 18-29 year-olds came out to the polls in the crucial Massachusetts Senate special election. Those were not the poll’s only hopeful signs for the center-right.

It did not take long for the rhetoric about the death of the Republican Party and conservatism in the wilderness to dissipate after the 2008 elections. The GOP’s sweep of all three major elections since—in the purple to blue states of Virginia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, no less—shows voters moving back to the Republicans (or away from the Democrats—or both) much quicker than many expected.

But, despite recent electoral successes, one question looms from the “Whither the Republican Party” stories of one year ago: Who leads the GOP?

Does Michael Steele or Rush Limbaugh? John Boehner or Mitch McConnell? Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee? Maybe the leader is Ronald Reagan, whose name conservatives still invoke reverently and often, 99 years after his birth.

Or do the Tea Partiers run things? The vacuum of leadership on the right seems to have created space for individuals around the country to stand up and lead. The Tea Party movement is not a top-down operation, but rather a loose collection of everyday Americans across the nation who decided to get involved, attend rallies and town hall meetings, write letters and articles, and run for office.

While many Americans feel passionately—one way or another—about the Tea Parties, the fact is that the movement still remains an enigma to much of the American electorate.

As a college student, Barack Obama expressed Marxist views, including the need for a new socialist U.S. government, according to a student who says he shared the future president’s opinion at the time. Such views by a college student may not be surprising. And like most students who hold radical views, Obama’s positions, at least publicly, have evolved substantially. However, this new window on Obama’s youth and early political thinking demonstrates how little is known about the background of America’s 44th president. Dr. John C. Drew, a grant writing consultant in Laguna Niguel, Calif., tells Newsmax he met Obama in 1980 when Obama was a sophomore at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Drew had just graduated from Occidental and was attending graduate school at Cornell University. Drew’s then girlfriend, Caroline Boss—now Grauman-Boss—knew Obama because she shared classes with him at Occidental. During Christmas break, Drew says he was at Grauman-Boss’ home in Palo Alto when Obama came over with Mohammed Hasan Chandoo, his roommate from Pakistan.

This YCC is supporting My Food My Choice in their campaign to save NYC’s incredible and diverse cuisine and protect your right to make your own food choices. My Food My Choice is a grassroots coalition of consumers and businesses that promotes the advancement of consumer choice in the marketplace and an environment of economic vitality. This coalition started because of the continuing burdens placed on business by regulations and the increased government control over people’s lives. The most recent being the National Salt Reduction Initiative (NSRI) unveiled recently by the NYC Department of Health. NSRI sets specific targets for restaurant and manufacturers foods, and effectively sets policy for the entire country.
